I’ve been a front-end web designer/developer for 12 years now, and though “web developer” has most often meant “stupid kid trying to build a website,” I think I’ve had the opportunity to pick up some really solid snippets here and there along the way.

I never went to school for anything related to computers. The only class for computing I ever attended was “Computer Essentials,” and that was because it was required.

I don’t tell you that so you can think, “Wow, Josiah must be Mr. Smarty pants.” I tell you that to encourage you in the pursuit of what you want to learn and do. Particularly in the field of web development and design, you can really take hold of the information available to the public and make major strides towards becoming a practitioner without spending anything more than your time.

One of the best things about the web, outside of Vader getting his Christmas wish, is the proliferation of information.

With the amount of accessible and well-organized information available on the web today, if you want to learn something, you usually can.

There’s my intro / buildup / preface / whatever. What I really want to share with you today are some extremely valuable resources for web development and design education. These sites have been extremely instrumental in my development as a web nerd.

That said; In the areas of development and design, here are some of the places online that have brought me to where I am today. This is by no means a comprehensive list, or even a well-organized one. Think of it more as a kick-start:

Development

I’m a believer in standards-compliant XHTML & CSS development for front-end (visual) development, and PHP for anything and everything back end (functionality). If you want to learn the ways of evil, and go with ASP.NET (Microsuck development stuffs), you’ll have to go somewhere else. Here you will be pointed to the free world.

XHTML: What is it? XHTML stands for: “Extensible Hypertext Markup Language;” a reformulation of HTML to conform to the XML specification. Just think of it as a new and shiny specification of HTML. Don’t let the acronyms scare you. XHTML is an easy to understand and easy to use code. To put it [very] simply: XHTML is what you write to display your content in a web browser.

XHTML Tutorial
http://jessey.net/

Simon Jessey, of jessey.net, has provided a 5-step tutorial covering the basics of XHTML 1.0 (this stuff comes in specifications). If you go there, and learn something, think about donating some change to him for his efforts (you can do that on his home page).

A side-note here: this tutorial is the perfect example of why the web is such a great place to learn; a freely-offered, community-created tutorial to get you on your way. : happy sigh : Sometimes the interwebs are just win.

W3Schools (HTML)
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_intro.asp

This might arguably be considered the more legit place to learn web stuffs, and I recommend browsing through the W3 Schools for almost everything you want to learn. I lean more towards personal tutorials, as they often have an easier-to-understand feel about them. That’s not to take away from professional stuff at all. There are a ton of hot resources out there. Pick and choose as you see fit.

HTML Validator
http://validator.w3.org/

As you learn to develop, start with standards. Don’t learn to code incorrectly and then go fix it. The HTML Validator offered by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) will tell you what’s wrong with your code, and help you become a better developer as you begin to get an idea of why your code sucks so much. If you want to be a punk (and/or test my word), go ahead and run this site through the Validator. It validates XHTML 1.0 strict.

“But Why?” You might ask. Firstly, because I say so, and I’m awesome, but secondly, because as more and more people work with standards, and comply with standards, crappy browsers will die horrifically deserved deaths, and the world will rejoice, as stuff starts to look the same no matter what platform you’re viewing it on.

XHTML Character Entities
http://www.intuitive.com/coolweb/entities.html

Sometimes when you’re writing out your code, you need to implement weird characters and such. This is one of about a million places you can go to find the code to write out these little weirdos.

Those are some pretty solid places to go for the basics of HTML, and beyond, but don’t forget to use your friend google.com to find more. The interweb is your oyster, whatever the crunk that means. We’ll move on from HTML for now, and on to making it look pretty.

CSS: What is it? CSS stands for “Cascading Style Sheets,” and they are what you write and attach to your XHTML documents to make them look pretty. Style sheets are one of my happy-giggle-favorite things about modern web development. Gone are the days of ridiculous embedded styling. Now, with CSS, you can say, “Hey document, use this font.” And it will. And you only have to say it once.

W3Schools (CSS)
http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_intro.asp

Just like the HTML tutorial above, this is the W3C’s offering to the world on the basics of CSS. It’s a great place to start, and a solid place to learn all about the magical enchantment that CSS can be.

CSS Basics
http://www.cssbasics.com/

CSS Basics is exactly what it sounds like. If you keep hearing about this “weird interwebs voodoo stylesheet” stuff, and want to know more, bookmark CSS Basics. It’s the perfect place for a measured approach to CSS.

I know this is a nerdy statement, but CSS is fun. Once you start writing it, and seeing it alter your content, if your heart isn’t filled with some measure of joy, I submit that you are a Nazi zombie.

Creating a CSS Layout From Scratch
http://www.subcide.com/tutorials/csslayout

This resource will actually guide you through building out a website from a pre-made design, including the basic HTML and CSS layout stuffs. Delicious. This is a really great place to go once you have a basic understanding of both HTML and CSS.

Design

I really have to be careful with this one, as not only does “design” imply a million things, but some of the most amazing designers the world-round are hardcore university-educated ninjas. Design encompasses so much more than just something pretty to look at. You’ve got color psychology, typography, spacing, alignment, blah, bleh, and bloo, just to name a few. If you think you have a good eye for design, give it a shot, but please, for the love of humanity, ask someone you trust if your work sucks.

If you hear, “Yes. Yes it does suck. In fact, that design makes me want to dig my eyes out with a spoon.” Please, stop trying to implement your own designs until you’ve got some proven skill. I say this from experience. I hurt the world of actual design for years with my painful to look at, cringe-worthy “designs.”

Thankfully, my pal Charles Williams came along side me, gave me some delicious stuff to code out, and at the same time, inspired me in my pursuit of actual design understanding. I’m by no means good at it, but I at least know how to avoid the suicide-inducing crap that I used to throw around.

That said, and with caution to the wind; here goes nothin’.

Master Photoshop in Just One Week
http://elitebydesign.com/how-to-master-photoshop-in-just-one-week/

Once again, the web shows it’s often amazing colors and offers up the basics of Photoshop that really are essential to using the most popular design software out there. Elite By Design is one of the many really awesome, and really free, resources out there for picking up some major knowledge with nothing more than your time. Here you will learn how to navigate the software, understand the interface, and do more than drop a color in the background like you usually do with MS Paint.

Photoshop Hero
http://pshero.com/

Once you have the basics of Photoshop down (a behemoth of an application), it’s time to start learning what you can actually do with all those bells, whistles, tools and goodies. This is one of a few tutorial sites that I’ll list here. I put PS Hero first, as the tutorials often lean towards the practical, and that’s generally a good way for me to learn.

You Suck at Photoshop
http://laughingsquid.com/you-suck-at-photoshop-by-donnie-hoyle/

This guy is both educational and hilarious. I’m sharing this one primarily because you do suck at photoshop, and additionally because the humorous approach can help take away from the monotony of all this learning. Good techniques, and hilarious videos. I haven’t watched them all myself, so I apologize for any content that offends your mother.

PSD Tuts
http://psd.tutsplus.com/

This is a great place to go for tutorials and design news. I’ve listed this one, as they have some added bonuses for those of you willing to drop a little cash ($9 a month or $22 for 3 months), including exclusive tutorials, and most importantly the Photoshop files used in the tutorials themselves. Delicious.

Designers Toolbox
http://www.designerstoolbox.com/designresources/

This is where I push you into something practical. The Designers Toolbox is a great place for dimensions of browsers, standard advertisements, and even business cards. Additionally, it has a ton of handy little Photoshop files containing web elements from different browsers. These can help make your otherwise crappy designs look pretty legit. Ok, I’m sorry for the continued mockery, I’m just assuming that if you’re actually new, you’re going to suck for awhile. Live with. Ok, I’m not really sorry.

I think I’ll end this little adventure with this; if you can discipline yourself and actually take the time to learn this information, you can honestly give yourself an excellent education with practical results. Those results are mostly in the form of cash from your future employers, who love all your 1337 web skillz.

Just remember me when you’re picking your teeth with diamond tipped toothpicks. I’m sorry for the slightly scattered nature of this post. There are a million other things I could say, and a million other places I could send you. Remember Google, remember coffee, and remember that you can genuinely become a ninja with just a little time and effort.

Also of note, I need to give a special shout-out to one Caleb White, best friend, and the man responsible for giving me my first push into the wide world of the web. When I was but 13 years of age, he came over and taught me the basics of HTML. Without that push, I would most likely be a gifted surgeon or famous actor. Thank you friend, for helping me become the man I am today.

Update: I forgot to add that if anyone has any specific questions, or any specific areas of interest. Let me know. I really only scratched the surface on this stuff. There are too many good resources out there to post in a thousand entries, let alone one. I’m not an expert in every area of the web by any means, but I can most likely point you in the right direction, no matter where you’re headed.

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. James 1:27 (NASB)

As many of you may know, due to my recent attacks to the interwebs, come June 12 through the 21st, I’ll be on a trip to Cambodia to support a local ESL school and some Orphanages in the surrounding area. I’m not trying to be super-saint-man or anything by my repeated assault with this information, I’ve just been thinking about it a lot lately, and I wanted to share some of my self-realizations.

You may or may not know about my heart for missions, and just a desire to help people where they are in general, but it’s something that’s been a part of who I am for a long time now, and I’m really excited to have another chance to step out and spend my time and energy on things that matter far more than the things I usually fill my days with.

James 4:14 is a fairly powerful statement, and oh so thought-provoking: “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. (NASB)” I’ve been really pressed with just how true that is of late, and I don’t want to waste my time. I read in a book recently that it’s very likely that in 50 years (give or take a few decades) everyone you know will be dead, and you will likely be forgotten. I’m not trying to be morbid, just tossing a little dose of reality out there.

The image on the left is more an accurate representation of the lack of fruit that I’ve produced with the majority of my life than it is to say anything about a want for finances.

I have been so blessed in my life with good jobs, marketable skills, and the often-used ability to either storm my way through almost anything, or use duct tape to boot-strap my way over just about any hurdle I’ve come across.

The realization I’m facing lately is that it has all been for myself, and for just about nothing worthwhile.

Don’t think for a moment that I’m moping around all “woe-is-me” with this action either. I’m just waking up a bit and realizing that I want to do more with my life.

I want to be in the middle of trying to gum my way through a delicious steak at the ripe old age of 50 (I wasn’t very good to my teeth, and didn’t age gracefully), and look back and be confident that I made a difference in lives around me, and in the lives of the less fortunate in the world, and you know what? I want to be confident that it wasn’t for me. That it wasn’t so I would be able to strut about telling you this or that, blah blah blah.

I want a life of purpose; a fruitful life, and I’ve decided that I’m going for it. By the grace of God, and with the help of like-minded people around me, I’m going to step out in confidence, nay(olde speak ftw), in faith, and live the life I know I’m called to.

I know this is a jumble of poorly[swiftly]-written word vomit, but it was on my mind. I’ll try and be a little more organized when I get the urge to attack you with a paradigm shift I’m experiencing.

For now, further up and further in.

Well, it’s not complete, but I decided I’ve waited long enough. My new design is here, and here to stay.

I’ve been trying to get myself to a place where I’m happy with my blog again, so I can continue to create content. That’s mainly what this is all about. I’ll be doing a ton of polishing on the site over the next few weeks to really finish it out and I’m hoping that actually having it live will be motivation for me to get the work done more swiftly.

That said, you can expect new videos, new games, and new posts to come flying at you at incredible speeds, as well as a general enhancement to the site’s functionality.

I’m especially excited about the “I Design You” section (featured on the main page). Please take a second to send me a picture of yourself so I can start digitally maiming you. That first image (of one Shelby Cook) is last-minute ditch effort to get something in place so the section wouldn’t be empty at launch. Sadly, Shelby did not, in fact, send me an image, and I did not in fact, spend more than 2 minutes on the “design.”

All things considered, I’m pretty happy with where things are, though you can expect changes and additions in the weeks and months to come (I’m an incessant tinkerer).

Side note: I don’t give a flying crap about Internet Explorer on my personal sites. So if you’re using it, and something looks bad, don’t bother complaining. I don’t care.

I did get a chance to use some sexy CSS 3 stuffs, and some of those schveet (though offensively proprietary) CSS rounded corners (-moz ftw), and I’ve recently been informed by my pal Kyle Steed that I can do the same thing for Safari. I’ll be looking into that soon.

For now, any and all feedback you have on design, usability, and overall delicious factor would be most appreciative. Don’t hold back. I want the site to be as good as it can, and I don’t mind being ripped to shreds.

Over and outsauce.

Project 7 is an incredible company I am honored to be working with, and I thought to share the goodness with you. Instead of writing up something myself, I’ll let you read what they say about themselves:

“Change the Score,” Project 7’s basic mission, strives to build a better world by creating a collective awareness and improvement in the seven areas of need. We believe there are others in the world who feel the same way they do but a lot of them just don’t know how. The company’s goal is to bring to market everyday products— the first of which is bottled water—that consumers can easily purchase in order to effect change across the seven areas of critical need. We are redefining the way people think about business and the products that are on their pantry shelf.

Project 7 will take more than 50 percent of profits from its products to create a community piggy-bank. Throughout the year, the company will accept applications from nonprofits that benefit one of the seven causes, eventually selecting three finalists for each. Project 7 will then invite consumers to vote online for the organization within each area that will receive proceeds collected from consumer purchases throughout the year. In total, Project 7 will support seven different charities, each representing one of the seven areas of need in our world.

Please take a minute to check them out. Also of note, their t-shirts are probably the most comfortable I’ve ever worn. Worth your money, and well designed. Project 7 Store. Delicious.

In case you haven’t heard, they’re working on another bailout bill. If they pass it, the value of our Dollar will be worse than it ever has, and we’ll be one step closer to a one-world currency. Tell your congressmen to vote no. Click here to get the names and contact info for your representatives. Seriously, find the number[s] for your state, make a call, and say, “Vote no for the bailout thing. Yeah thanks.” : click :

Update: I just got in touch with a Texas State representative. His assistant, after hearing what I had to say, replied with, “Unfortunately for the senator, he’s already voted yes.”

I think they’ve had a lot of people calling in.

I’m in an interesting new phase of life. I’ve been moving around this here Earth for two months shy of 25 years, and in all the days I can remember, I can’t recall another time where my breath seemed so sweet.

My life has taken a turn into the broad unknown and my heart, in feeling it, is filled with wonder, even joy. My thoughts, my dreams, my passions, my goals, my friends, my life; everything is seasoned with something new, something yet untasted.

In the past month, as I have pressed through the daily grind of what you might call a relatively average American life (incredible blessing in and of itself), I have had the feeling of a new light of hope just over the next hill. A green pasture that I won’t want to leave, a lofty field of dreams, if you can find it in yourself to endure the phrase.

Vague though it may be, this is an image of my heart, and the only one I think I can paint right now.

I have a new sense of direction, and new motivations to drive me.

I don’t really have much more to say, other than to share my excitement of this nameless joy that has come into my life, and strong though these words may be, I feel confident in their digital declaration, and more if you’re around me in the coming days.

I am continually amazed that at the end of pain, or challenge, life more sweet can be seen to grow. I love learning from my mistakes, and though I surely wish I had never made many of them, I would not trade the knowledge that comes with them for a lifetime of peace.

I’ll try to keep the updates frequent as the new sights come into view.

“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.”
Romans 11:36

My friends and I love taking insane pictures just for the crunk of it. The following are a few shots from our latest outing. We plan on going on another shoot in a few weeks when Josh is back in town, and Shelby and Cameron can make it out. I mostly avoid blogging this sort of thing, as Facebook is a nice place to let a good number of people see them, but I just had too much fun with these to not share them here. We kept the action a little tame this time, in the hopes that our next shoot can escalate things. The last time we did this sort of thing, there were many a painful landings. We kept those to a minimum this time, but fear not, we’ll bring you the pain. We know how much you love it. Sicko freaks.

You’ve all seen quizzes like these around the web. You’re all guilty of wasting 5 minutes of your time to find out if you would make a good bullet sponge at a hippie convention. I decided to swoop in and figure out some other details about myself that are equally as important. You never know when you’ll need to be sure about the length of time you can survive trapped in your home, or what your exact caffeine level is. This stuff is science, people. Science. Proceed to learn more about me that you thought you would in a lifetime. Click any of the result boxes to take the quiz yourself. I’d love to see how we measure up. This may be the most important blog post I’ve ever made. Try and keep up.

This is one of the more useful of these quizzes I deem meme. When I was a babe I was always stumbling out of airlocks. It’s handy to know exactly how long I could survive were it to happen again, even if I didn’t have that “can breathe in space” power I’ve come to love.

Be aware that as you take this test, you’re not only testing your knowledge as an expert on the world’s robots, but also increasing the suspicion that you are a robot yourself. Everyone knows that robots are familiar with each other. If you see anyone with a percentage higher than mine (I am obviously not a robot), be on the lookout for other potential evidence that supports them being a robot, such as denying the existence of robots, or the consumption of old people’s medicine. Also, if you’re afraid of robot attack, I recommend Old Glory Robot Insurance.

Nothing says, “Hey everyone, I’m in the mood for social suicide,” like blatantly admitting you even know what a programming language is, let alone how many different languages you can visually identify. Even in today’s technically progressive world, the nerd is still a bit of a social outcast, having only recently climbed out of the “I don’t know what girls look like” pit and into the “circle circle dot dot” one. By my calculations, that puts us just above 4th graders, and likely in today’s sexually progressive world, behind a large portion of them. To draw your attention away from my this blight on my person, I direct your attention to these people. Not to trample on anyone’s hobbies or dreams, but holy crap, we need limits people.

Though this is handy to know, I’m not sure how accurate this test is, as I recently tried trapping myself in my apartment for 6 hours and nearly died. I think I might need to replace my A/C filter; I kinda thought the “Poisonous Shroud” brand might be a bit more than just an appealing name.

In case any of my ministerially-minded friends are considering a life of ministry to the Korowai tribe, I thought I’d include this one. I’m going to assume that the test is somehow aware of my lean build and took into account that they would likely turn me into strips of beef jerky. Hence the high-seeming number I could feed. I tell you, these quizzes are getting smarter every day.

I’m going to take the rant path with this one and say that I dearly hope that God’s power is not limited to clicking a mouse at an extremely high rate of speed. I would have preferred something like “Dear God, someone call an ambulance” or “This person is in need of divine intervention, or he will die due to heart palpitations and brain explosion.” That way you can bring God into it and more accurately classify a person with as much coffee in them as I often have.

The only reason I’m including this one is that expressing my actual opinion would be far too vulgar for the clean world wide web that we all live in and enjoy. I loathe myspace more than I can express with words. Some suggested reading, in case you desire more insight: The Psychology of Hate by Robert Sternberg (Ed.), Hatred: The Psychological Descent into Violence by Willard Gaylin, Why We Hate by Jack Levin, and I Hate The Sydney Roosters by Nick Politis. I will also take this time to once again recommend all my fellow Firefox users out there the best plugin yet made: Am I On Myspace? You’re welcome.

34

I was already aware that I can kick some serious ass, this test just confirms it. I could probably take out an entire classroom at just about any elementary school around. This is likely the most relevant quiz of all that I’ve listed here, as you never know when you’ll either need to reprimand a large group of 5 year olds (by kicking the sweet living crap out of them), or when a large 5 year old zombie uprising might occur. Be ready my friends. Be ready.

Much to the chagrin of a couple of my friends (ahem & ahemmer), I’m posting yet another glorious and addicting flash game for your online time-wasting pleasure.

50 more balloon popping levels with some kickin’ new balloons, level types and weapons make this installment of Bloons the best yet. Remember that the game remembers you. Play a level now and come back later to play the next. Your progress will be saved as you go. I can’t tell you how much I love that feature. State-saving goodness in a flash game. Who’da thunk? Also of note is a new link in the game that takes to to a Bloons level builder, yet another way to waste some time. At least now you can contribute to the games. Productive?

To those of you that think this is cheap blogging, remember that I love flash games, and am just trying to share some of my favorite pieces of the web with you. Don’t be hatin’. Where else would you find these gems? Granted, you’d be better served to find your online gaming goodness at places like Kongregate like I do, but I’m assuming you non-gamer types don’t go looking for ways to waste a decade of your life away. I feel like this is just one small way I can share myself and my addictions with you all.

Enjoy.
